There it sits day after day awaiting the appointed time. I stare, I wonder, I imagine. What is hidden behind that Christmas wrapping paper? I look at the shape of the box and ponder its contents. It could be …. or maybe not. My hands want to unravel that Christmas paper and peek because the mystery calls me to discover the unknown. But, thankfully I resist once again awaiting the appointed day.
That is the wonder of Christmas. But wait, there’s more!
As a young child I heard about Mary, Joseph, shepherds, wise men and the baby Jesus. With some coaxing I even convinced my 3 brothers and neighborhood friends to participate in live child-like plays in our living room acting out the Christmas story. Who could say “no” to joining the audience with such an enthusiastic assortment of actors dressed in whatever materials and props we could find in our closets? Well, at least our mom and dad and the neighborhood parents could not!
I had been staring at the gift Jesus gave me. With wonder, I read about His gift in my Bible imagining I was a play actor in His story. However, I had not yet unwrapped His gift to me.
Yes, the gift He had given to me and to you came in the form of a baby born in a manger. That baby lived and grew and experienced many of the same things you and I do with every day life. This gift is all around us this time of the year. We visually see nativity scenes sitting on store shelves or in yards around the neighborhood. In some form or way we may even stare at this gift once again this Christmas. But, do you choose to leave it unwrapped again this year? I hope not!
Eventually, I stopped play-acting and unwrapped the gift of eternal life given to me from my loving heavenly Father. The gift was more than a baby. It was God’s only son, Jesus, who willingly gave His life for you and for me to pay the price of my sin and yours. We unwrap this precious gift of forgiveness and eternal life by placing our faith in Jesus as our Savior.
Look it up! For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
Don’t leave the God’s gift to you unwrapped this year! Tear into it because today is your appointed day!
P.S. Yes, I will be sure and update you after Christmas letting you know what is in that present!
