This will conclude Joshua Study Part 1 – Look for Joshua Study Part 2 coming this Fall!
Another King hears about what Joshua did to Ai and Jericho and heard about the treaty that the people of Gibeon made with Joshua. So this king gets together with several other kings and says, “come help me destroy the Gibeonites. Five kings moved up with all their troops taking positions against Gibeon and attacked it!
The Gibeonites call to Joshua for HELP! Joshua shows up with his entire army including all the best fighting men. And the Lord tells Joshua in verse 8:
Do not be afraid of them; I have given them into your hand. Not one of them will be able to withstand you. Joshua 10:8
An all night march led Joshua’s men to their destination. God threw the opposing team into confusion and Israel defeated them in a great victory. As they fled before Israel on the road down from Beth Horon to Azekah, the Lord hurled large hailstones down on them from the sky. The Lord has all the resources of the heavens at his disposal. Verse 11 says more of them died from the hailstones than from the sword.
In fact listen to Joshua’s request in verse 12: “Oh sun, stand still over Gibeon, Oh moon, over the Valley of Aijalon. So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies.” (The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day). Verse 14 says that “there has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the Lord listened to a man. Surely the Lord was fighting for Israel.”
The five Kings – what happened to them? Verse 16 says they fled and hid in the cave at Makkedah. No hiding from Joshua or from God! God says, “ok, here is what you do.” “Roll large rocks up to the mouth of the cave, and post some men there to guard it. But don’t stop! Pursue your enemies, attack them from the rear and don’t let them reach their cities, for the Lord your God has given them into your hand.” Pretty sure Joshua is on track with God, not questioning or doubting, but is getting the “inquiring” part figured out!
Verses 29-41 go on to tell us of other cities the Lord handed over to Joshua. The chapter ends with verse 42 “all these kings and their lands Joshua conquered in one campaign, because the Lord, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.” And finally verse 43, “then, Joshua returned with Israel to the camp at Gilgal.” (Home again after a long journey involving many battles.)
Exploring Joshua Chapter 10
Nothing literally nothing is impossible when God is on your side!
Do you believe this? Just read this chapter again in its entirety! See how the Lord fights for his people. He gets involved in the nasty battle. He send hailstones, he causes the sun and moon to stand still, he sends confusion. Who but God? I want him fighting my battles! What about you? Are there battles you are fighting today? This week? Can you see no solution? Hand it over to the mighty one who has all the resources of heaven at his disposal! Inquire of Him!
Do you think you have the answer to a difficult situation you are facing? Maybe you do but maybe you need to check with God first or maybe you need to just watch and wait for him to throw hailstones your way.
God uses many things in our lives to conform us to the likeness of his Son. Is that your prayer today? Lord use whatever you need to in my life to make me more like Jesus.
The cave was not a good place to be. I can’t imagine what those five Kings were thinking, waiting in that cave with no way out. Don’t choose King life – choose God life! God wants you choosing him, not your own way with your own self righteous plan.
The battles can be long and exhausting but God will take you home again – trust him!
Ending your journaling today write out a prayer using Chapter 10. Start out with all the thank you’s to God that you find through reading this passage. Then write what you are praying for today.
I am thankful….
that God fights my battles and ask me to simply be a part of his plan.
that my God has all the resources at his disposal to meet my needs.
that God will make me like his Son.
that God is more concerned about my holiness than he is about my comfort.
I am praying…
for victory in the midst of confusion in my life right now.
for provisions that are needed in the days ahead.
I will remain faithful and true and not doubt my Savior’s love and care.
